Just recently, on Saturday January 23rd, there was a celebration of 10 years of solid capoeira in Toronto. The event was organized by Monitor Saci of Capoeira Camara. Capoeira Camara is led by Contra Mestre Bola, and he has been active in the Tdot since 2000. While there were several groups active before this, Bola as a teacher is the first to keep one school going for so long.

Monitor Saci, riding on an inter-group love vibe started by the open roda hosted by Falcão at Capoeira Malês, offered his condo space for the jam and had many amenities available to all.

Saci from the facebook event page: “This party / potluck is a celebration of 10 years of hard work through blood sweat and tears (literally). We would like to invite ANYONE who has trained capoeira with ANY Toronto groups to be part of this celebration. It will be a reunion of students new and old. Please send this invite to anyone who has trained with any Toronto groups over the last decade.”

It goes on… “feel free to bring any / all capoeira videos as there is a TV in the room. If you would like to go for a quick dip in the pool or hot-tub, you can also bring a bathing suit.” Talk about some serious capoeira party.

Unfortunately, (not really I guess), I am in Brazil and wasn’t able to check the event, hence the lack of pictures and the lack of Rio Mate at the event… but… I heard some good things through the grape vine. Present were people from Malês Capoeira, Axê Capoeira, União da Capoeira, and of course Capoeira Camara people.

Capoeira in Toronto is experiencing a wave of unity… this will encourage the art to grow in Toronto! Congrats to Saci and Capoeira Camara and all the capoeiristas in Toronto.
