aluCine is the premiere showcase of cutting-edge Latin short film and video and we have the pleasure of being a sponsor.
aluCine? really, what does that name mean?… hmm lets see, from my layman non-film nerd lens, I see revolutionary Latin film makers dropping acid and partaking in some seriously existential and university educated super-8 guerrilla film making… of course after all of this they refresh themselves with a cold Rio Mate… ok seriously folks, the folks at this festival have tremendous experience dealing with experimental media forms. This is their tenth year engaging in this crazy-ness of optical boundary pushing. Check this quote from their site: “While acknowledging specificities, using trans- or interdisciplinary optics we explore the boundaries and location of contemporary film and video practices that challenge monothematic and mono-visual definitions.” These guys dont mess around, and in not messing around, they present one of the most original and finely curated film festivals in North America.
From its beginning aluCine has included and showcased international talent to promote a critical dialogue between Latin and non-Latin artists. Their talks and workshops examine diverse theoretical, philosophical and technical perspectives on visual representation. This year aluCine continues the productive rethinking of issues around programming, and representation.
aluCine accepts submissions, goes after the good underground films and presents workshops talks and all that good stuff… check their website and facebook for all the info and schedule.
Best bets for checking out the festival, which takes place at a few galleries and theaters around town, is opening night on Thursday the 12th of November at 7:30pm, at Lennox Contemporary Gallery, 12 Ossington Ave, and Monday November 23 rd when a number of cutting edge Brazilian shorts will be featured.
